What is a DIP Switch
What is a DIP Switch ?
A DIP switch is a manual electric switch that is packaged with others in a group in a standard dual in-line package. The term may refer to each individual switch, or to the unit as a whole.
DIP switch type: direct plug-in, patch type, angle type, side dial key type.
Dip switch working principle
Each key of the DIP switch has two pins on the top and bottom of the back. Turn it to the ON side, and the two pins on the bottom will be turned on; otherwise, it will be turned off. These four keys are independent and not related to each other. Such components are mostly used for binary coding. There are 16 kinds of codes in total, which are used to control a wide range of types. According to different products and designs, the ways of using DIP switches are also different.
Application
All types of DIP switch are widely deployed across various industries and applications today, including such uses as:
1. Data processing, communication
2.Remote control
3. Anti-theft automatic alarm system
4.Air shower room
5.Air conditioning control panel
6. Train model
7. PC expansion cards
8. Arcade machines
9. Automatic garage doors
Rotary DIP switch refers to a switch that the user can manually or use a tool such as a screwdriver to rotate (rather than switch back and forth) in the range of circular motion (if this is done, it is achieved in this way). Rotary coded DIP switches, like joysticks and sliders, are also intended to be directly mounted on the PCB, where they will control the output behavior of electronic devices. Some are waterproof and are widely used in precision measuring instruments, mixing and editing, test equipment, aerospace and military voice/data communications, and radio transmitters and receivers.
Sliding DIP switches, rocker DIP switches and piano DIP switches are actually just variants of the second major type of DIP switches, the more traditional toggle switches. Including: Normally Open (NO), which means to disconnect its default position from the circuit, and actuate the switch to complete the operation again. Normally closed (NC), which means that the actuation switch will open contact with the circuit instead of closing the circuit.
On high-end DIP switches, gold contacts can usually be selected, which greatly improves reliability and efficiency. They can replace old-style jumpers, with units ranging from 1 to 32 poles, providing great potential for flexibility and functionality. Some models have longer poles, which can reduce loading time in intensive production environments, and can be modified by cutting the poles of the DIP switch to the level required for PCB/Breadboard installation. At the same time, it can be used for PCB surface mounting and through-hole mounting configurations.
